Baden-Württemberg: Warning of PFC traces on fruit and vegetables in settlements

Baden-Baden (dpa/lsw) - According to preliminary analyzes of soil samples for PFC residues in a housing estate in Baden-Baden, other households should refrain from consuming home-grown fruit and vegetables. The people concerned would be written to, the city announced on Wednesday. In addition, fruit and vegetable samples were taken from selected garden plots and analyzed for PFCs in the laboratory.

PFC stands for perfluorinated and polyfluorinated chemicals, which are harmful to health and hardly biodegradable in nature. An environmental scandal surrounding these substances has been moving Mittelbaden for years. By the end of 2008, a company was said to have brought PFC-contaminated compost to fields in Baden-Baden and the Rastatt district in particular. The pollutants later also found their way into the groundwater.

Only a few months ago, traces of the environmental toxin were detected in the Ooswinkel settlement in Baden-Baden, and soil samples were taken. The city has now announced that experts are still processing and evaluating the extensive analysis results. The results should be available by October. A further information event is planned for affected households.
