Bavaria: Activists block road in climate protest

Munich (dpa / lby) - Activists of the "last generation" blocked traffic at a climate protest in Munich on Monday morning. Nine people were involved in the blockade on the Luitpold Bridge, five of them stuck to the road, the police said. The road closure was lifted after about an hour and a half. The police took those involved into custody.

The climate activists want to draw attention to the "deadly failure of the federal government in a climate emergency". On posters in Munich, they demanded "100 km/h and 9 euros for everyone" - i.e. a maximum speed of 100 km/h on German autobahns and the reintroduction of a 9-euro ticket for local public transport. There will also be protests in five other German cities on Monday.

After a similar action in Munich a few weeks ago, several activists were sent to police custody for 30 days by court order. According to the Bavarian Police Responsibilities Act, citizens can be detained for up to a month on the basis of a judicial decision in order to prevent the commission of an administrative offense of considerable public importance or a criminal offence. This period can be extended by a maximum of one additional month.

The "last generation" often makes the headlines with their blockade actions or attacks on works of art. The activists want to draw attention to the destruction of the environment and climate change. In Rome earlier this month, members of the group poured soup over a painting by Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh. In August, two activists stuck themselves to a Rubens painting in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. Last week, the district court in Munich issued a penalty order against the latter.
