Bavaria: Basic need for Ukrainian teachers in schools covered

Numerous teachers from Ukraine teach in the bridging classes in Bavaria. After the search was initially rather difficult, the situation has now eased.

Munich (dpa/lby) - According to the ministry, the basic need for Ukrainian teachers at schools in the Free State is covered in most cases. As the Ministry of Culture in Munich informed the German Press Agency on request, 575 Ukrainians are currently teaching in the Bavarian bridge classes - around 420 of them have already worked as teachers in Ukraine.

There is also the possibility of employing Ukrainians outside of the bridging classes as teachers or support staff. However, the ministry does not record their number.

In addition, individual classes would be established again and again in the Free State. Therefore, the search for teachers will continue, it said. Applicants could register with the school authorities and schools.

"In view of the thousands of new Ukrainian children and young people in the schools with a wafer-thin staffing level, the deployment of Ukrainian teachers is exactly the right way," emphasized the chairman of the Bavarian Philology Association, Michael Schwägerl. In times of teacher shortages, support staff could relieve the regular teachers. The association can also imagine the deployment of additional staff in other areas such as IT or administration and laboratories.

According to the ministry, around 29,100 children and young people from Ukraine are currently attending Bavarian schools. In elementary schools, Ukrainian children go directly to regular classes and receive additional German language support. So far, around 810 bridging classes have been set up in the secondary schools to prepare the students for regular classes.
