Dispute over Truth Social: Google is now offering the Trump app in the store

In early 2021, ex-US President Trump founded Truth Social shortly after Twitter banned him. But the social network is having teething problems. Google doesn't want the app in its store. Truth Media does not comply with certain guidelines. Apparently that has now changed.

The US technology company Google is now offering the app from Donald Trump's online service Truth Social in its Google Play app store. The decision came after Truth Social agreed to enforce policies to remove infringing content, Google said.

Google had previously refused to offer the app through Google Play. This was due to a lack of moderation and violations of Google policies. Since then, Truth Social has implemented effective systems for reporting and removing unwanted content, Google explained.

Trump founded Truth Social in February 2021 after being banned from major online platforms, including Twitter. During his tenure, Trump made more excessive use of Twitter than any US president before him, and was able to present his polemical and often derogatory statements about political opponents to a global audience around the clock.

Trump's supporters on the new platform have so far been relatively small. He has just over four million followers on Truth Social and over 80 million on Twitter. The platform is used "almost exclusively" by right-wing Trump supporters, recently emphasized David Thiel from the Stanford Internet Observatory.
