Bavaria: Golden Citizen's Medal will be made of silver in the future

Lauf (dpa / lby) - The golden citizen medal of the city of Lauf an der Pegnitz will only be gold-plated in the future - and no longer made entirely of fine gold. The city council unanimously accepted the corresponding proposal on Thursday evening, said a city spokesman on Friday. The reason for the decision is simple: gold has become too expensive.

The Golden Citizen Medal is rarely awarded in the Middle Franconian municipality, most recently in 2019. There are currently no medals in the depot, the city has to reorder. However, the price of gold has risen sharply in the meantime and is also fluctuating greatly. According to the draft resolution, the gold value for a medal is at least 5,000 euros. On the other hand, medals made of silver that are gold-plated are significantly cheaper - here costs between 64 and 350 euros per medal are incurred. According to the city council decision, these can now be purchased. The spokesman said that no award with the Citizen's Medal is currently planned.
