Bavaria: man leaves passenger drunk on the Autobahn

Forchheim (dpa / lby) - A man left his drunk passenger after a breakdown in the car on the Autobahn 73 in Upper Franconia. As the police announced on Monday, the driver had piled up near Forchheim after the breakdown on Sunday morning because he did not have a driver's license.

A police patrol found the car on the hard shoulder after information from other road users with engine damage. Inside was a drunk 40-year-old sleeping in the passenger seat. The car was also full of empty beer bottles. After the officers woke the man up, he protested that, contrary to the police officers' initial suspicion, he had not been behind the wheel himself. The actual driver just fled. He was finally able to prove his claims with a cell phone video showing him talking to his friend as a passenger while driving.

The police then searched for the actual driver without success, as he could possibly be in an emergency. Seven hours later, the 30-year-old finally reported himself to the police. It turned out that he did not have a driver's license and had fled after the breakdown. He now faces criminal charges for driving without a license.
