Bavaria: Munich decides "bed tax" for hotel guests

Munich (dpa / lby) - The Munich city council decided on Wednesday to introduce an overnight stay tax for hotel guests - and thus engaged in an open dispute with the state government. Because they want to prohibit the municipalities in the Free State on Thursday from introducing such a "bed tax" by changing the municipal tax law. Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) has already announced that he will take legal action in this case - and receives support for this action from the Bavarian Association of Cities.

Specifically, in Munich it is about five percent, which adult hotel guests should pay on top of their overnight stay in the future - but not on additional offers such as breakfast or sauna. In other cities in Germany there is already such an accommodation tax, in Bavaria, however, Munich would be the first. The city expects annual additional income in the mid double-digit million range.
