Bavaria: Truck trailer goes up in flames

Unterschleißheim (dpa / lby) - On Wednesday, a truck trailer caught fire on Autobahn 92 near Unterschleißheim. According to the police, the tractor-trailer caught fire when a tire burst, the rim dragged over the streets and got so hot that the rear axle burned.

According to the information, the 37-year-old driver reacted with quick-wittedness, steered the team onto the hard shoulder and even uncoupled the truck from the trailer, which was completely on fire a few seconds later.

According to the police, the extinguishing work was then also difficult because the trailer had loaded 19 tons of a chemical liquid, which, however, turned out to be non-hazardous.

The extinguishing and recovery work still took around three hours. During this time, the highway was completely closed. A "massive traffic chaos around the accident site" was the result, as the police said.

Because the soil into which the chemical had penetrated had to be removed, only one lane of the motorway was open until late in the evening.

The driver suffered chemical burns on his right hand and smoke inhalation while attempting to extinguish the fire. He came to a Munich hospital.
