Bavaria: Water shortage: no supply problems to be expected

Munich (dpa/lby) - Heat and drought have caused the levels of lakes and rivers in Bavaria to drop significantly, but according to the state government, will not lead to a significant impairment of the water supply for the people. Crop failures are also not to be expected.

"We currently have low to very low groundwater levels at 70 percent of the measuring points," said Head of the State Chancellery Florian Herrmann (CSU) on Tuesday after a cabinet meeting in Munich. Even with rivers and lakes, there are low to very low water levels at 50 percent of the measuring points.

The water industry has increased monitoring of the situation. The storage economy is currently being operated more intensively. In addition, more water will be transferred from the Danube system to the Regnitz/Main system in order to combat the drought, especially in northern Bavaria, which has less water.

"Currently, an impairment of the water supply - speaking in general - is not to be expected," said Herrmann, citing information from Environment Minister Thorsten Faithr (free voters). Agriculture Minister Michaela Kaniber (CSU) does not expect any significant impairments to the harvest either.
