Bavaria: wife in need of care killed: Eleven years imprisonment required

Munich (dpa / lby) - In the trial against an 85-year-old for killing his wife who was in need of care, the public prosecutor's office demanded eleven years in prison for manslaughter. After 65 years together, the accused is said to have first hit his wife with a wooden stick and then choked her to death in June. A verdict in the trial at the Munich II Regional Court was expected on Monday afternoon.

The man's defense attorney demanded a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for his client on Monday. He referred to his "psychic state of emergency" at the time of the crime and his high willingness to cooperate in the process. At the start, the 85-year-old had confessed to the crime. "We know relatively well what happened," said his defense attorney. But that was only the case because his client confessed "early and comprehensively".

Because of a cerebral hemorrhage, the woman, who had been responsible for the household until now, was no longer able to do many things, according to the indictment. Among other things, because the accused was increasingly overwhelmed by having to take on more household chores, he decided on June 10 to kill his wife.

"I am ashamed of what I did," said the accused. He was driven that day by a "force that he could not define". "Everyone asks for a long and healthy life. I would have wished that for my wife too."
