Contemporary art: a banana taped to a wall sold for 120,000 dollars

A price that must have disconcerted more than one. The work titled The Comedian by contemporary art star Maurizio Cattelan found a buyer for $120,000 this week at the Art Basel fair in Miami. It's currently a banana taped to a white wall with duct tape.

Two of the three copies of this work sold for $120,000 each at the Art Basel fair this week. The third copy is still available, but for an increased price of $150,000.

Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan is known for his humorous and provocative style. In 2016, his controversial sculpture of Adolf Hitler kneeling and pleading was auctioned off for more than $15 million at Christie's, notes Franceinfo.

"His work forces us to question the value that is given to material goods", explained to CBS the Emmanuel Perrotin gallery, which represents the artist. Before adding: "the show is as much a part of the job as the banana." We are reassured.
