A tenth class from Hesse is on a class trip in Berlin when a car drives into the group. A teacher dies, several people are seriously injured.

Wiesbaden/Berlin (dpa/lhe) - The woman killed by a driver in Berlin was a teacher from northern Hesse. The Hessian state government announced on Wednesday that the woman was visiting the capital with a tenth grader from a school in Bad Arolsen in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district. Another teacher who was with the group was seriously injured. Students are also among the injured.

A driver drove his car into a crowd near the Berlin Memorial Church on Wednesday morning, his motive is still unclear. According to the fire department, one woman was killed, six people were critically injured and three people were seriously injured. There are also several minor injuries. The driver - according to the police a 29-year-old German-Armenian - was arrested.

The Hessian state government was deeply dismayed by the incident. "This shocking news from Berlin leaves me stunned and deeply affected. My thoughts are with the victims, who were full of joy on a class trip in the capital," said Prime Minister Boris Rhein (CDU). He hopes that the injured will make a full recovery. He expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family.

Minister of Education Alexander Lorz (CDU) said that emergency care teams had been sent to Bad Arolsen to help relatives, classmates and teachers. "A team from the school is on its way to Berlin to support the young people on site and their parents. In addition to clarifying this incident, it is important that the students can talk about the traumatic experiences."
