Hesse: Minister: Focus on vulnerable groups with boosters

Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - According to Hesse's Social Affairs Minister Kai Klose (Greens), people in nursing homes in particular should be immunized with the new corona vaccines adapted to Omikron. Klose said on Friday in Wiesbaden after consultations with the Hessian Vaccine Alliance, which includes representatives of doctors and pharmacists, the municipalities and the Hessian Ministry of Social Affairs.

Hesse expects around 500,000 doses of the vaccines adapted to the archetype of Sars-CoV-2 and the omicron subtype BA.1 in the next two weeks. They come from the manufacturers Moderna and Biontech/Pfizer.

The European Medicines Agency EMA had cleared the way for the two adapted vaccines, and the EU Commission had approved the substances shortly thereafter, as the authority announced on Friday. A recommendation from the Standing Vaccination Committee of the Robert Koch Institute is still pending.

For the vaccinations, the structures that have proven to be particularly efficient will continue to be used in the future - the logistics of the pharmacists and the interaction between the medical profession and the public health service, said Klose. It remains to be seen how demand for the new vaccines will develop. The structures of the vaccination centers of the health service in Hesse have been maintained even in times of lower demand. Around 15,000 vaccinations are currently carried out in Hesse every week.
