Hesse: More than three million euros for the prevention of extremism

Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - The Hessian departments for the promotion of democracy and the prevention of extremism will be funded by the state with more than three million euros in 2023 and 2024. This was announced by the Ministry of the Interior in Wiesbaden on Thursday. "The success of the preventive measures has led to a steady expansion," said Interior Minister Peter Beuth (CDU). In total, programs and offers in the prevention of extremism would be supported with more than ten million euros in 2022.

There are currently 30 specialist units for democracy promotion and cross-phenomenon extremism prevention (DEXT specialist units), one contact point for initial advice, for example. According to the ministry, the focus is on local networking. The offices also offer support for municipalities, institutions and citizens. Each department can receive up to 100,000 euros in funding.

"From the point of view of the state government, the DEXT departments are important contact points in the region, especially in these difficult times, when the legitimacy of the state is sometimes aggressively questioned by various groups," explained Beuth.
