Hesse: Number of company bankruptcies in Hesse increased

Wiesbaden (dpa/lhe) - The number of corporate insolvencies in Hesse rose by twelve percent last year. As the State Statistical Office announced on Thursday, the insolvency courts opened 754 procedures out of 1,203 insolvencies filed. The rest were rejected for lack of mass. The sum of the expected claims amounted to over one billion euros. At least 6,400 workers were affected.

Most company bankruptcies were in the construction industry, trade and car repair shops. In 2021, the total number of corporate insolvencies was at its lowest level since the insolvency code was introduced in 1999.

The number of consumer bankruptcies fell in 2022 compared to the previous year by nine percent to 4589 procedures, as reported by the state office. This development was therefore characterized by a change in the law. In 2021, the numbers had increased significantly compared to the previous year because many debtors were waiting for the insolvency law reform.

The reform has meant that consumers can be freed from their remaining debts after three years instead of the usual six years. The reduction applied retrospectively from October 1, 2020. Compared to 2019, the last year before the change, there was an increase of 25 percent in personal insolvencies in 2022.
