Hesse: University building reopened after fire protection work

Marburg (dpa/lhe) - Two buildings at the University of Marburg, which were partially closed due to fire protection deficiencies, can be fully used again. According to the Central Hessian university, the construction work to improve fire protection was completed in time for the start of the winter semester lectures on Monday and the high-rise buildings were fully opened.

The deficiencies were noticed during a fire protection test in August and the rooms from the second floor upwards were then closed. A total of four university high-rise buildings on the campus on the outskirts were affected. The work in the other two buildings is ongoing - they are expected to be fully reopened at the end of November.

According to the university, the test revealed that smoke was entering the side stairwell, blocking a second, safer escape route. In order to rectify the defects, shafts were provided with fire protection insulation and new door seals were installed, among other things. "The costs are currently estimated at less than one million euros," says the university.

The skyscrapers are located on Wilhelm-Röpke-Strasse in the Lahn Valley. In the meantime, several institutions of the university have been relocated from there to the inner-city campus. However, several departments with institutes, centers and seminar rooms are still housed in the university towers.
