According to WTOL, police in Toledo confirmed that lightning struck the building, causing the wall section with large murals to fall.

In 2020, Derek Chauvin, a Minneapolis police officer, killed Floyd, 46. Chauvin was convicted and sentenced to 22 1/2 years imprisonment. Floyd's murder sparked protests across the globe and calls for reform in U.S. policing.

Artist David Ross painted the mural in July 2020. He said to sister station WJW he was interested in doing another mural.

Toledo announced that it will create a new mural, and will choose a new location.
