Mecklenburg-West Pomerania: German dance company celebrates its 30th anniversary

Neustrelitz (dpa/mv) - The German dance company in Neustrelitz (Mecklenburg Lake District) is celebrating its 30th anniversary this Wednesday with a dance journey through time. There will also be a dance festival in the Kulturquartier with scenes from many plays, including Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana - ein Tanzritus", said managing director Marco Zabel on Tuesday. The dance gala should contain highlights and memories of the ensemble's creative implementations from recent years.

The contemporary dance ensemble has almost 26 employees, 15 of whom are dancers from ten countries, and performs at home and abroad. The cooperation with the theaters in Neubrandenburg and Neustrelitz is particularly close. The facility goes back to the State Folklore Ensemble of the GDR, which was founded in 1952, but was re-established in 1991/1992.

For years, the dance company had to worry about its existence because of the theater dispute, but in 2018 it was given planning security as part of the theater pact until 2025. The state and the cities of Neustrelitz, Neubrandenburg and the district are contributing a total of around 700,000 euros to the new financial concept. Most recently, the choreographer of the ensemble, Lars Scheibner, and the Neustrelitz physicist and artist Marcus Doering received the state culture prize, endowed with 10,000 euros, for a creative project with computer-aided light effects in the pieces.
