Mecklenburg-West Pomerania: Promoted Rostock Seawolves starts the league with a win

Rostock (dpa/mv) - The Rostock Seawolves wrote history in their first game in the basketball Bundesliga. In a dramatic game, the promoted team beat ratiopharm Ulm 85-80 (42-36) in their BBL premiere on Sunday. The best thrower in the team of head coach Christian Held was JeQuan Lewis (17 points).

The Rostock fans had to hold out for almost three minutes until Derrick Alston Jr. scored the first basket for the Seawolves in the BBL. The game was almost even until just before the end of the first quarter, but after that the hosts were able to pull away to 17:10 thanks to a 7:0 series. Until the middle of the second quarter, the Rostockers were the dominant team and were already 29:20 ahead. Ulm then fought their way up to a point at times, but the Held team was able to distance the guests again before the break.

Even after the change of sides, it remained a roller coaster ride of emotions. In the meantime, the Seawolves even pulled away to 51:38, but the game finally tipped over in the final quarter. Almost six minutes before the end, Ulm led 73:64 after a 14:0 run. Nine points behind, the Mecklenburg team looked like they were sure to lose, but 68 seconds before the end they equalized (79:79) and finally managed to keep the upper hand.
