Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: 15 million from hardship funds for day care centers and schools

Schwerin (dpa / mv) - Minister of Education Simone Oldenburg (left) and Minister of Science Bettina Martin (SPD) have emphasized the state's aid for daycare centers, schools and universities as part of the planned state energy fund. "We will not allow energy saving to be carried out on the backs of children and young people in daycare centers and schools," said Oldenburg on Thursday in Schwerin.

The state will support school and daycare providers with ten million euros in addition to the federal energy price cap. This would ensure optimal funding, support and learning conditions even in a difficult energy situation. This included light and heat. Schools and daycare centers had previously been exempted from the requirement to limit room temperatures to 19 degrees.

The universities should also receive additional help. "The universities are expressly included in the state's planned energy fund. This provides planning security and is good news for the universities," said Martin. They would benefit fully both from the advance payment and from the gas and electricity price brakes imposed by the federal government. If there is still a financial gap, the country will step in, said Martin. According to reports, five million euros are initially planned for this. At the same time, however, the minister made it clear that the universities - like all other areas - must contribute to energy savings

Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) announced on Wednesday in the state parliament in Schwerin that the state's hardship fund would be increased from 30 million to 100 million. It is part of an energy fund worth 1.1 billion euros, with which the state government wants to cushion the consequences of the extreme increase in energy prices and advance the energy transition. 600 million come from the recently agreed federal aid packages, 500 million euros are said to be contributed by the state itself. The hardship fund is to be used in the event of existential emergencies by companies and, among other things, also be used for schools, universities, social and cultural institutions.
