Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: 1,500 at protests against Ukraine and refugee policies

Rostock/Neubrandenburg/Pasewalk (dpa/mv) - In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, around 1,500 people protested against arms deliveries in the Ukraine war and against federal and state energy and refugee policies. As police spokesman said on Tuesday, there were rallies and demonstrations in 19 cities on Monday evening. The largest meetings with around 200 people took place in Rostock and Pasewalk (West Pomerania-Greifswald). But there were also protest events in Schwerin, Teterow, Parchim and Grevesmühlen as well as in Neubrandenburg and Greifswald.

In Grevesmühlen and Pasewalk, protests were mainly made against planned new accommodation for several hundred asylum seekers and refugees in container homes in the regions. The district of Northwest Mecklenburg wants to accommodate up to 400 people in Upahl near Grevesmühlen, against which there have been protests for weeks. In Pasewalk, the city representatives are to decide on March 2 whether the district can lease an area on the outskirts of the city and build accommodation there for up to 300 refugees.

In Rostock, police reported a fight between a participant and a counter-protest participant, injuring both men. There were no disturbances at the other meetings, it said.
