North Rhine-Westphalia: 83-year-old drives to carnival procession: police stop him

Voerde (dpa / lnw) - An 83-year-old driver caused a stir on the sidelines of the carnival parade in Voerde on the Lower Rhine. The man broke through blocking points at high speed by avoiding blockades from patrol cars on the sidewalk, the Wesel police reported on Tuesday. The 83-year-old ignored stop signals from a patrol car pursuing him and headed for the carnival parade.

A truck standing across the street finally stopped the senior and a pursuing patrol car blocked him so that he could not continue. The check showed that the 83-year-old was no longer able to drive a car due to mental defects.

He ruthlessly endangered human life on Sunday, was unreasonable during the control and insulted a police officer. He also demanded that the truck be put away immediately, otherwise he would drive over the curb again.

His driver's license was confiscated. His 81-year-old wife, who was sitting in the passenger seat, was finally able to persuade him to hand over his papers. Den Voerder is now facing criminal proceedings.
