Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Accommodation for refugees: This is what the districts in MV are planning

Recently, more refugees have come to Germany - also in the north-east. While people from Ukraine often live in apartments, many asylum seekers come to communal accommodation. But they are also full in MV.

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - Municipalities across Germany are facing major challenges when it comes to accommodating refugees. Even after a summit with Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD), there is no quick relief in sight. What are the districts and independent cities planning in the north-east?

Nordwestmecklenburg

Panic about the planning of a container village for 400 refugees in Upahl, a town of 500, made headlines nationwide. It should be ready by the end of March. Recently, plans to set up additional accommodation for 100 to 150 people in Gadebusch became public. This container shelter is said to be near the police station. The district said the planning was still in its infancy. The places in the community accommodation are occupied. In the meantime, two sports halls in Wismar are also being used, which are to be emptied thanks to the containers in Upahl.

Schwerin

According to the city, the existing community accommodation for people in the asylum process with a capacity of 236 places is fully utilized. Therefore, a mixed occupancy in a currently underutilized shared accommodation is planned, both with war refugees from Ukraine and for people in the asylum process. In addition, another community accommodation for asylum seekers with around 100 to 120 places is planned in Schwerin. Problems are caused by the high number of unaccompanied minors. Although according to the country code you only have to record 25, the actual number is about three times as high.

The state's initial reception facility, Stern Buchholz, is also located in the city area. The capacities there should be expanded to over 1000 places, the Ministry of the Interior announced in January.

Ludwigslust-Parchim

According to the district, the two shared accommodations in Parchim and Ludwigslust with a total of 580 places are more than 90 percent occupied. In the municipality of Demen, 90 housing units in two blocks of flats are currently being prepared to accommodate asylum seekers in apartments. In the future, around 400 asylum seekers should be able to find accommodation there. The first residents will probably be able to move in from the beginning of May at the earliest.

District of Rostock

The community accommodations in the district of Rostock are 92 percent occupied. According to the district, however, they are already fully utilized from 75 percent. Suitable properties or other options would continue to be sought. The considerations went in different directions.

Hansestadt Rostock

According to the country's largest city, there are only a few free places in accommodation. Most recently, more than 1,400 people were housed in communal accommodation. Various options for accommodating refugees are currently being examined. Both the construction of containers and the conversion of buildings play a role. The use of sports halls is only provided for in a kind of emergency plan. The plans in the city area provide for 30 to 300 places each. At the beginning of the year, container accommodation for around 100 people was set up in the Marienehe district.

Mecklenburg Lake District

In the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district there are six community accommodations with space for more than 1400 people. Most of the places are occupied. It is also not always possible to use up all the spaces, for example because of use by families or possible conflicts between certain nationalities. Gymnasiums or containers are currently not in use.

However, District Administrator Heiko Kärger (CDU) also brought a possible container accommodation into play at the end of January. The largest refugee accommodation in the district in the eastern part of Neubrandenburg is to be expanded by around 100 places. In addition, it is checked again whether the Fünfeichen barracks in Neubrandenburg can be used again for around 400 refugees. This barracks had already proven itself as accommodation in 2015, but has since been auctioned off by the federal government to a businessman. But he had signaled his agreement, it said.

Western Pomerania-Rügen

Vorpommern-Rügen has eight community accommodations with almost 1,300 places for asylum seekers, which, according to their own statements, are fully occupied. The district examines all possibilities and every property offered for its suitability. In addition, seven properties are in the process of being renovated or in the planning stage. The lease for one property was extended until the end of the year. An additional 700 asylum seekers are to be accommodated in the seven accommodations currently being renovated or planned. Completion is planned between mid-2023 and 2024. Places would not be named to protect residents.

Vorpommern-Greifswald

In Vorpommern-Greifswald, according to the district, there are community or emergency accommodations in Greifswald, Torgelow, Wolgast, Loitz, Ueckermünde and Plöwen. The community accommodations are exhausted. More than 1,500 refugees who did not come from Ukraine were last accommodated in the district. In Greifswald, in addition to the two existing accommodations, space for more than 130 people is to be created in a closed hotel by mid-March. In addition, District Administrator Michael Sack (CDU) said that offers had already been obtained for further accommodation. It is therefore a building in modular design, but not a classic container.
