Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Employee calls daughter and saves senior from fraud

Ribnitz-Damgarten (dpa / mv) - A prudent bank employee from Western Pomerania saved a pensioner from losing 35,000 euros - but very narrowly. As a police spokesman said on Wednesday, strangers called the 87-year-old woman from Bad Sülze (West Pomerania-Rügen) on Tuesday. The caller, posing as an officer, told the woman that her daughter had caused an accident that killed four and was therefore in custody. However, she could be released on bail of 35,000 euros.

The elderly woman was so shocked that she took a taxi to Ribnitz-Damgarten and withdrew the money there. While the 87-year-old was driving back, the bank employee called the real daughter because of the large amount. She immediately drove to Bad Sülze and received her mother and the money, so that the handover of the money could just about be prevented. The police expressly thanked the bank employee for her prudence.

There were at least 18 such shock calls in the region on Tuesday, with the scammers demanding up to 100,000 euros. In no case did it work.
