Greifswald (dpa / mv) - The city of Greifswald wants to preserve its traditional fishing. Measures to support the companies that have come under pressure are currently being discussed, the city announced on Thursday. For example, mooring fees could be suspended, jetties repaired and sales on seasonal and regional markets increased, it said.
Before reunification, 50 fishermen worked in the cooperative of the Wieck fishing village, which belongs to Greifswald. Today there are ten. "The fishery is part of Greifswald," emphasized mayor Stefan Fassbinder (Greens), "the history of Wieck fishermen goes back to the 12th century."
Fishermen on the Baltic Sea are in trouble, among other things because of drastic catch restrictions imposed by the EU. She wants to protect the stocks that have come under pressure.
