Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Job loss in MV industry

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - Almost 1,800 jobs were lost in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's industry last year. According to the Mecklenburg-West Pomeranian Statistical Office, an annual average of 50,125 people worked in companies with 50 or more employees. A year earlier there were 51,920, as the office announced on Wednesday. The previous peak in employment in the MV industry was reached in 2020 with 53,177 employees. At 15.8 billion euros, sales were slightly above the 2021 level of 15.7 billion euros.

A spokesman for the employers' association VUMV (Association of Business Associations MV) attributed the job loss primarily to the bankruptcy of the MV shipyards in early 2022. In addition, as a result of the corona pandemic, there were "one or the other" operational closures, especially in retail and tourism, he said. The sharp rise in energy costs, on the other hand, has not yet had an impact.
