Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Merkel as a role model: resuscitation training at the market in Greifswald

Resuscitation can often prevent worse. At the weekend, those interested can train in cardiac massage again in Greifswald - and follow in prominent footsteps.

Greifswald (dpa/mv) - Five years ago, the then Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) practiced it on stage: On Saturday (11:00 a.m.), those interested can train in resuscitation again on the Greifswald market square. The association Land-Rettung MV and the University Medicine Greifswald called for the campaign.

The importance of the so-called lay resuscitation before the arrival of the rescue service is great, emphasizes the university medicine. Cardiovascular diseases are the most common cause of death in Germany. In a cardiac arrest, the brain is no longer supplied with oxygen and is severely damaged after just a few minutes. According to the information, the chances of survival for those affected depend crucially on whether resuscitation measures are started before the rescue service arrives.

In addition to training on models, groups are invited to take part in a competition: they should advertise amateur resuscitation as imaginatively as possible.

When Merkel practiced cardiac massage on a doll for the Bee Gees hit "Stayin Alive" in 2017, she took part in a city bet. This was won because more than 500 people trained in resuscitation at the same time.
