Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: More sales in construction - price jumps should distort the picture

The State Statistical Office reports great sales and order figures for the construction industry. But the construction association pours water into the wine. Price jumps in material and energy inflated the figures, says Managing Director Jörg Schnell.

Schwerin (dpa/mv) - The larger construction companies in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania presented impressive figures in September - at least on paper. The companies with at least 20 employees made 9.4 percent more sales than in September 2021, as calculated by the State Statistical Office. Orders received were 22.3 percent above the September 2021 level.

The managing director of the state building association, Jörg Schnell, sees no reason to celebrate in the figures presented. Strong jumps in material and energy prices inflated the numbers, he told the German Press Agency. Around 15 percentage points would have to be subtracted to get a real comparison. And then the industry slipped into the red with a nominal 9.4 percent more sales.

It is fitting that the number of hours worked and the number of employees have hardly changed. The companies worked 0.1 percent fewer hours than in September 2021. The number of employees rose slightly by 1.3 percent to 10,363. The wages paid increased by a total of 7.5 percent.
