Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Replacement funds call for flu vaccination

Schwerin (dpa / mv) - Because of the increasing number of infections with RS and flu viruses, the substitute health insurance companies are calling for flu vaccinations. "Even if this year's flu season started very early, it's not too late to protect yourself with a vaccination," said Kirsten Jüttner, head of the Vdek association of substitute funds in the north-east, on Friday in Schwerin. Elderly people, the chronically ill, pregnant women and medical staff in particular called on them to be vaccinated against influenza.

The cashier referred to data from the State Office for Health and Social Affairs, according to which the number of respiratory diseases registered weekly in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania doubled between the end of November and the beginning of December - extrapolated to the total population, this would be 80,000 cases in the first week of December alone. According to the data, the proportion of flu cases more than doubled this week compared to the previous week. Rhinoviruses, RSV and other respiratory diseases also circulated.

Jüttner warned against underestimating the flu, which is a serious illness. Even with a normal progression, the patients would often have to struggle for days with a high fever, dry cough, headache and body aches.
