Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: Stralsund buys Kleiner Dänholm island

Stralsund (dpa / mv) - The city of Stralsund is buying the smaller part of the island of Dänholm, which is located between the city and the island of Rügen. The little Dänholm will belong to the Hanseatic city in the future, according to a statement from Stralsund on Tuesday. The citizenship made a corresponding decision at its previous meeting.

With the purchase of the 10.4 hectare area, the city wants to secure the development of the area as well as the public use of the paths and squares. A research center is also being planned together with the German Maritime Museum and they want to invest 20 million euros in it. A spokesman for the city did not provide any information on the purchase price of the areas.

According to the information, there is a harbor with a fishing and marina association on the Kleiner Dänholm as well as the Nautineum as a branch of the German Maritime Museum. The island was therefore created in 1848 as part of a port for the Prussian Navy.

This year, the city had already bought the site of the insolvent MV Werften in Stralsund in order to develop a maritime industrial park here.
