Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania: The federal government supports the "Baltic Sea Philharmonic" orchestra

Berlin / Schwerin (dpa / mv) - With a large subsidy, the federal government ensures the continued operation of the "Baltic Sea Philharmonic" orchestra. The multi-national orchestra, which was founded in 2008 and closely linked to the Usedom Music Festival, is to be supported with 300,000 euros in 2023. "Without the generous support from funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and Media, the future of the orchestra would not be secure in the coming year," said Thomas Hummel on Friday, he is both the managing director of the orchestra and the director of the Usedom Music Festival. The grant has now been approved by the Budget Committee of the Bundestag.

The state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania also announced funding of the same amount in September. Minister of Culture Bettina Martin (SPD) is pleased about the co-financing from Berlin: According to her, the orchestra is helping to attract young musicians to the festival in Usedom.

According to their own statements, the orchestra includes musicians from almost all countries bordering the Baltic Sea, as well as from Norway. "In the coming year, the Baltic Sea Philharmonic is planning several concerts in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and other federal states," it said.
