North Rhine-Westphalia: 500 million euros in pandemic compensation for NRW municipalities

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The municipalities in North Rhine-Westphalia will receive an additional 500 million euros to cushion the consequences of the Corona crisis. NRW Municipal Minister Ina Scharrenbach (CDU) announced on Thursday in Düsseldorf that payments would be made on December 16th. The budget committee of the state parliament had previously passed a corresponding resolution.

In contrast to the first Corona year 2020, relatively even loads can now be assumed, explained Scharrenbach. For this reason, the municipalities are granted compensation from the state’s corona rescue package without an application, based on the population ratios as of June 30, 2022. The minister emphasized that this is a fair, low-administration and efficient procedure.

The subsidy for the 396 municipalities amounts to around 27.15 euros per inhabitant. The districts and the Aachen city region receive 20 percent of the funds allocated to their district municipalities or to the members of the Aachen city region according to the population ratio. Scharrenbach explained that this key could be insufficient for municipalities with a small number of inhabitants. To avoid this, all municipalities should receive at least 300,000 euros.
