North Rhine-Westphalia: ex-Sparda bank boss: district court wants to announce verdict

Should a former bank boss go to jail? The prosecutor says yes. The regional court in Münster wants to announce a verdict on the former CEO of Sparda-Bank Münster on Friday.

Münster (dpa / lnw) - In the process of expenses and billing fraud at the Sparda-Bank Münster, the district court in Münster is expected to announce a judgment on Friday (12:00 p.m.). Former CEO Enrico Kahl is accused. The 64-year-old admitted in the process that he had billed private parties, concerts and trips worth around 460,000 euros through the bank. On the penultimate day of the trial, the public prosecutor's office had demanded a prison sentence of three years and three months for these acts and damage caused by an unjustified dismissal of an employee.

The defense attorneys had come out in favor of a suspended sentence of one year and six months. In the event of dismissal, they had pleaded for acquittal. Kahl had made an extensive confession in the process. The former bank manager did not use the opportunity for a last word before the verdict.

Originally charged was a million-dollar damage. However, parts of the indictment had recently been dropped by the district court. Kahl was dismissed without notice by the supervisory board in 2015 after routine checks. At that time, the bank had a balance sheet total of 2.3 billion euros. The bank manager was a board member for 20 years and has been CEO of the cooperative bank since 1998. Sparda-Bank Münster merged in 2018 with Sparda-Bank West, based in Düsseldorf.
