North Rhine-Westphalia: IS supporter must answer before OLG Düsseldorf

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - A suspected IS supporter has to answer before the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court from October 20th. The Higher Regional Court has admitted the charge of the Attorney General on suspicion of membership in a terrorist organization abroad, a spokeswoman said on Monday. Since the 25-year-old was a teenager at the time of the crime, the court must first decide whether the hearing will be closed to the public.

15 more dates are scheduled until December. The woman was last resident in North Rhine-Westphalia and in March 2022 was one of a group of ten women and 27 German children who were brought to Germany by the federal government from a prison camp in Syria. The Attorney General had four arrested directly at Frankfurt Airport.

According to the indictment, the 25-year-old has been a supporter of Salafism since 2013. Her husband, to whom she has been married since 2014, joined the Islamic State (IS). Both traveled to Syria via Turkey. She and her husband actively trained in the use of firearms in order to be able to fight for IS themselves.

Also on Monday, the Düsseldorf public prosecutor announced several charges against IS supporters and returnees. Among them is a 29-year-old woman from the Wesel district. She is said to have traveled with her husband via Turkey to Syria in October 2013 and supported IS there. A 68-year-old from the Steinfurt district with a Turkish and German passport is accused of having supported IS with money.

The Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court must now decide whether to admit the two charges.
