North Rhine-Westphalia: NRW-SPD calls for higher burdens on the rich

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - In view of the energy crisis and rising prices, the North Rhine-Westphalian SPD is emphatically demanding greater taxation of high wealth. In an application for the SPD party convention on November 5th and 6th in Berlin, the state association with the largest number of members reiterated its intention to "tax large fortunes more heavily and distribute wealth more fairly". This includes "in addition to a one-off wealth tax, the reintroduction of wealth tax, a more substantial inheritance tax and a revision of our tax system, which taxes very high incomes more heavily and relieves low and middle incomes," said the application submitted to the German Press Agency. The "Rheinische Post" (Monday) reported first.

The NRW-SPD cited the economic consequences of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine as the reason. "In view of the current crises and future tasks, now is the moment when people with high fortunes have to take on more responsibility," the application said. The salaries of the board members of DAX companies have risen sharply in the past year. "The managers earned almost four million euros on average."

"Even before the crisis, many people had to see how they could get by in everyday life," said NRW state chairman and deputy federal party chairman Thomas Kutschaty on request. "Now those who really don't have to worry at the end of the month are more in demand."
