North Rhine-Westphalia: Number of adoptions in NRW increased slightly

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - The number of adoptions in North Rhine-Westphalia has increased slightly. Last year, 881 children and young people were placed for adoption in NRW (457 boys and 424 girls), as reported by the State Statistical Office (IT.NRW) on Tuesday. That was 3.2 percent more adoptions than in 2020 and 1.7 percent more than in 2017 (866).

Almost half (436) of the adopted children and adolescents were not yet three years old. In a five-year comparison, the number of adoptees in this age group has increased by around a quarter (24.6 percent).

About two-thirds of the adoptions (67.7 percent) were through a new partner of the biological parent. 260 children and young people were taken in by people outside the family environment (29.5 percent). Of the 881 adoptees, 50 were not German nationals.
