North Rhine-Westphalia: old town stabbing at carnival: three years of juvenile detention

Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) - An 18-year-old has been sentenced to three years in juvenile detention for the life-threatening knife wounds at carnival in Düsseldorf's old town. The regional court found him guilty of three counts of attempted manslaughter under juvenile criminal law, the court announced on Friday. According to the indictment, the 17-year-old at the time of the crime was traveling in Düsseldorf with a friend of the same age and got into an argument with another group.

According to investigators, there was an altercation that was "conducted with considerable brutality by both sides". The 17-year-old pulled a knife and stabbed two opponents. Then he and his friend are said to have stabbed, kicked and punched a third victim.

His defense attorney had unsuccessfully applied for a suspended sentence. The co-accused buddy of the main perpetrator was sentenced to two weekends in youth detention for double bodily harm.

After a public manhunt, the duo turned themselves in to the police. The trial took place behind closed doors for youth protection reasons. From judicial circles it was said that both had partially admitted the allegations in the process.
