North Rhine-Westphalia: Sammarco wins 187th Union race in Cologne

Cologne (dpa / lnw) - The three-year-old stallion Sammarco won the 187th Union race on the racecourse in Cologne. After an exciting finish, Sammarco with jockey Bauyrschan Mursabajew won on Monday in front of 12,000 spectators with a head advantage against So Moonstruck ridden by Andrasch Starke. The two are now regarded as joint favorites for the German Derby on the first Sunday in July in Hamburg.

Third place in the Union went to Alessio (Adrie de Vries), who was able to overtake the long-leading Maraseem (Michael Cadeddu) in the straight. In third place, Alessio was six lengths behind the first two.

Peter Schiergen is the trainer of Sammarco in Cologne, which belongs to Helmut von Finck's Park Wiedingen stud, who is also the breeder of the new Union winner. The race was endowed with 70,000 euros and ran over 2200 meters.
