North Rhine-Westphalia: series of fires in Monheim: the police are looking for arsonists

Mettmann (dpa / lnw) - A series of fires kept the fire brigade and police in Monheim am Rhein in suspense last weekend. In the Berlin district of the city in the Mettmann district, the emergency services had to move out four times because of burning cars and garbage containers, the police said on Monday. After initial investigations, the police assume that the four fires are related and were intentionally set. Nobody got hurt. The Monheim fire brigade was able to extinguish all the fires quickly. However, the total damage to property amounted to several thousand euros. The police are now looking for witnesses to the crime.

Already on Saturday night, a waste paper container in front of an apartment building caught fire, which also spread to a hedge. The fire brigade was able to prevent a car parked nearby from being affected. Two more fires in the immediate vicinity occurred the following evening. Here, unknown persons set fire to the windshield wipers of two cars parked on the side of the road. And on the night of Sunday, according to the information, there was another vehicle fire. Here the front tire of a parked car had been set on fire. The fire also spread to the engine compartment, causing major damage.
