North Rhine-Westphalia: Worldwide carrier pigeon scene meets in Dortmund

Dortmund (dpa/lnw) - Particularly beautiful and fast birds are the focus of the German carrier pigeon exhibition this weekend in Dortmund. Fair and Pigeon Association expected around 130 exhibitors and 10,000 visitors from all over the world to the two-day trade show. Special transport vehicles were also presented. According to the organizers, it is about scientific questions, feeding, dovecote construction and topics related to betting flights.

On Saturday the pigeon show started very satisfactorily, said Harald Herbach, member of the presidency of the carrier pigeon association. In the morning, numerous carrier pigeon fans were already cavorting in the fair.

According to the organizer, the world's largest homing pigeon exhibition could see around 1,000 homing pigeons by Sunday. Among them are, according to the information in the "exhibition of superstars", the almost 40 best birds in Germany, which had successfully participated in this year's carrier pigeon Olympics in Romania. In addition, the most beautiful males and females would be presented in a beauty contest, said Herbach.

At the largest public pigeon auction in Europe, 64 international and German top carrier pigeons are also to be auctioned. The proceeds benefit the association's support association and members in need, said Herbach.

After two years of the compulsory Corona break, the event for the international scene and the approximately 25,000 members of the Association of German pigeon fanciers is an "absolute highlight", it said at the start.

The carrier pigeon was added to the list of intangible Unesco cultural heritage in March. Nevertheless, the sporting use of carrier pigeons remains controversial. Critics see the birds exposed to considerable stress during races.
