Bedburg (dpa / lnw) - A 16-year-old student was seriously injured on a school trip to the Erft in Bedburg, Lower Rhine. Rescue workers should have resuscitated him, the police said. The youth was taken away by rescue helicopter. A 52-year-old teacher who rushed to the boy's aid was also injured.

The 16-year-old is said to have drifted off and capsized during a school trip with his boat. At the scene of the accident there is a weir with treacherous currents. According to unconfirmed information, the student is said to have been pulled under the water by the current, which also caught the teacher. Detectives were on site, securing evidence and interviewing witnesses.
