Saxony-Anhalt: 37,000 visitors to "Arche Nebra": modernization begins

The "Arche Nebra" visitor center is being completely modernized and technically overhauled. The historic site is scheduled to reopen in June 2023 - with some additional offerings.

Nebra (dpa/sa) - Around 37,000 people visited the "Arche Nebra" visitor center in the Burgenland district by the end of September this year. "The summer in particular went well. In general, it was felt that many people were taking the opportunity to go abroad again," said Managing Director Bettina Pfaff of the German Press Agency.

"Since October, the facility has been closed until June 2023 for extensive modernization work," said Pfaff. The house will be redesigned to be more family-friendly and less accessible. In addition, the master copy of the sky disc will then be exhibited in the ark. Another focus is the complete technical modernization of the planetarium. According to Pfaff, the total costs amount to around 3.2 million euros, of which around three million euros come from the federal and state governments.

During the closure, there will continue to be guided tours to the location of the sky disc on the Mittelberg on request, according to Pfaff. "We assume that after the long period of the pandemic, people want to get out into nature again."

The Nebra Sky Disc Visitor Center opened in 2007. The bronze disc has been part of UNESCO's documentary heritage since 2013 as the oldest concrete representation of cosmic phenomena. The original can be seen in the permanent exhibition of the State Museum of Prehistory in Halle.
