Zeitz (dpa/sa) - The city center of Zeitz should be filled with more life. A project under the motto "Zeitz Inner Vital" serves this purpose. The federal government is supporting the project with around 460,000 euros, the city announced on Thursday. The aim is for people to stay in the center more often and, above all, longer. This should also make living in the city center more attractive, explained Mayor Christian Thieme (CDU).
Zeitz is struggling with vacancies as a result of migration. The background is the structural change in the region after 1990, which is characterized by the chemical industry, the food industry and lignite. According to Thieme, the "Zeitz Innen Vital" project also includes the temporary renting of the ground floors of vacant premises in the city. This gives potential founders and companies the freedom and space to experiment with innovative ideas.
The municipality's own financial contribution to the project, which will run until the end of 2025, is ten percent. Zeitz has around 27,000 inhabitants. The town in the Burgenland district advertises itself as a green residential and cultural town on the Weißen Elster.
