Saxony-Anhalt: Feußner: lack of teachers greatest challenge

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - Minister of Education Eva Feußner (CDU) has again acknowledged significant problems with the provision of lessons in Saxony-Anhalt. The personnel situation is tense, said Feußner on Thursday in the state parliament. Secondary and community schools are particularly affected. "The teacher shortage is currently the greatest challenge in education policy."

The CDU politician gave little hope for a quick improvement. The supply of trained teachers and lateral entrants is becoming less, especially in shortage subjects, she said. The state relied on a whole range of measures, but more study places at the Otto von Guericke University in Magdeburg were also needed. "In addition, the dropout rate in teaching must decrease."

The left faction called for a master plan to secure school education. The measures taken so far are not sufficient, the school system is slipping deeper and deeper into the basement, said parliamentary group leader Thomas Lippmann. "A good education also costs more money." Susan Sziborra-Seidlitz (Greens) called for special supplements for teachers if they go to regions with particularly great needs.
