Saxony-Anhalt: Greens: Minister keeps forest fire reports under lock and key

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - The parliamentary group of the Greens quarrels with the handling of the Minister of Forestry Sven Schulze (CDU) with an expert opinion on the fire protection measures in the Harz National Park. He should "publish the paper immediately," the parliamentary group demanded on Friday. The report from the TU Dresden has been available to the ministry for more than two months. According to the Greens, corrections or additions should now be made to the report.

Schulze "apparently has a problem with the results of the report," said parliamentary group leader Cornelia Lüddemann. It was "a mystery" to her why a client would want to make corrections or additions to a scientific report. "Why doesn't he let the MPs look at the results at least internally? Why aren't they forwarded to the ministry in Lower Saxony that is also responsible?" Lüddemann asked.

Last year there were several fires in the 25,000 hectare Harz National Park. In the rough terrain, they could only be extinguished with great effort. For days at the beginning of September, around 1,800 emergency services fought against flames near Schierke. The district declared a disaster because its own forces were no longer sufficient. International support came for the first time, Italian fire-fighting planes helped, as did several fire-fighting helicopters.
