Saxony-Anhalt: Number of Ukrainian schoolchildren increased significantly after the holidays

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) - At schools in Saxony-Anhalt, the number of Ukrainian students has increased significantly after the summer holidays. On Thursday, around 4,700 children and young people from Ukraine were recorded at general schools, as a spokesman for the Ministry of Education announced on Friday in Magdeburg. Almost 230 Ukrainian students have arrived at the vocational schools. Before the holidays, around 3,400 boys and girls who had fled Ukraine had attended regular or special arrival classes. Schooling is compulsory for the refugees, and they also have to be taught according to the Saxony-Anhalt curriculum.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, as of Thursday, 27,310 war refugees from Ukraine have been admitted directly to the administrative districts and urban districts. Among them are around 2750 children of kindergarten age and around 6750 children of school age. The spokesman for the Ministry of Education said that it must now be clarified how many and which students do not attend compulsory schooling or which are registered but are no longer in Saxony-Anhalt.
