Saxony: EU millions for Dresden's climate neutrality

Dresden (dpa/sn) - Dresden will receive around 7.5 million euros from the European Commission for the change to a climate-neutral city. The money comes from the Neutral Path project, with federal and state funding, up to 46 million euros could be invested in sustainable and future-proof building and energy concepts by the end of 2027, according to the town hall.

Saxony's state capital wants to test and research innovative ideas for more climate protection in housing construction, energy supply and e-mobility in pilot projects with partners from science and business, which will later be implemented. Together with the Spanish city of Zaragoza, Dresden should become a pioneer in climate neutrality in Europe.

"In practice, becoming a climate-neutral city is a Herculean task," said Mayor Dirk Hilbert (FDP) according to the announcement. It will only succeed "if all actors reflect on their greenhouse gas emissions and courageously try out solutions to reduce them".

According to the information, companies are testing construction and energy concepts for affordable housing or the use of renewable energies for tenant electricity offers via photovoltaic systems, local energy suppliers feed the network with green district heating. Dresden is one of the pioneers in electromobility nationwide with over 500 charging points in the city area - and is also active in European initiatives to exchange specialist knowledge internationally and receive available funding.
