Saxony: look at the fathers of Robert and Clara Schumann

Zwickau (dpa/sn) - The Robert Schumann House in Zwickau takes a look at the fathers of the artist couple Robert and Clara Schumann in an exhibition. "Great fathers: August Schumann and Friedrich Wieck" is the title of the show that opens on Sunday (January 8). "Their names are often overshadowed by the more well-known children, but encyclopedia articles testify to the fame of the fathers as early as the middle of the 19th century," the museum explained on Monday.

August Schumann worked as a publisher, writer, translator and bookseller and his book series were in demand at home and abroad. Friedrich Wieck, Clara Schumann's father, worked as a piano and singing teacher, composer, music writer and instrument dealer in Dresden and Leipzig. The success of his pedagogical-progressive methodology is shown not least by his daughters Clara and Marie, who have performed internationally as pianists.

According to the information, the special exhibition will include portraits, diaries, books and printed music, as well as belongings of the two men, such as a tobacco tin and a silver drinking cup. In addition, one showcase each is devoted to the personal relationships between Robert and Clara Schumann and their fathers. The show can be seen in the foyer of the Robert Schumann House until May 1st.
