Saxony: Refugees move into new accommodation in Dresden

Dresden (dpa / sn) - The time of the Dresden trade fair as a temporary refugee accommodation is history. As of this Thursday, up to 178 refugees will be accommodated in the former Eventwerk in the north of Dresden, the city administration announced on Wednesday. The people who were previously accommodated in Hall 4 of the Dresden Exhibition Center are particularly affected.

"When we temporarily used the trade fair to accommodate refugees, we did so with the intention of finding suitable alternatives by January 2023 at the latest. This goal has been achieved with the event work," emphasized Stephan Kühn (Greens), Mayor of the building. Unlike in the mess hall, the refugees could now live and sleep in a more private area. "We have specific offers for language acquisition and leisure activities on site."

According to the administration, the capacity in the new accommodation should be expanded to 314 by March at the latest. In November alone, a total of 560 refugees and asylum seekers were assigned to the city, including people from Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Eritrea, India, Iraq, Syria and Myanmar.
