Saxony: teachers' association: profession must be upgraded

Dresden (dpa/sn) - In order to retain teachers and attract qualified young people, the profession must be upgraded, according to the board of the state teachers' association. Colleagues in the teaching profession must be supported and freed from additional tasks that are not directly related to their teaching activities, demanded the chairman of the association, Michael Jung, in Dresden on Saturday. In addition, the revision of the curricula is a "long overdue step" to ensure more efficient teaching and more effective learning.

According to the association, there was again a lack of applications in the recruitment process for the second half of the 2022/2023 school year. The number of new student teachers at the universities in Leipzig and Dresden also did not reach the planned number.

The association called for the training to be reformed and, among other things, to be more adapted to the needs of prospective teachers. For example, a stronger regionalization of training is absolutely necessary in order to be able to guarantee the supply for all of Saxony.

Above all, the recruitment of young people in the subjects mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology as well as in the technical subjects of vocational schools must be pushed, it said.
